Boobooks

January 20th 2011

I love secondhand bookstores. The atmosphere of a used book shop is special. Some shops can get neglected or stock any old rubbish. But the good ones have quality authors on a vast range of topics. They have mountains of books, and have an eccentric Never Ending Story bookshop quality to them.

Boobooks, Armidale is a secondhand bookshop in this ilk. They have 5 rooms downstairs and two rooms upstairs, packed with books. It is well organised with a range of books from fiction to history to gardening to childrens to whatever. There will be something there that will catch your interest. The fun is finding it.

I have certain shelves I go to, each time I visit. First left and in the second room is the comedy section. I look here for rare Footrot Flats. Next is on to the SciFi/ Fantasy. Here I look for favourite authors or take a leap with something new and appealing.

Today after my normal haunts I headed upstairs. They have a lot of vinyl records here, the only place I have seen them in Armidale. I looked through the history section and found a Robert Hughes - Culture of Complaint for $8. Should be good, although I think my brain will read it in his pompous/intellectual voice from his documentaries.

Anyway, another fun outing to Boobooks in Armidale.

What have you found lately in a secondhand bookstore?

It was my first visit to Armidale. It was a business trip for my wife, and I went with her to see a new part of Australia. The city is gorgeous, but part of its beauty is how nice, warm and welcoming its people are. Nothing showed me this more than my experience in BooBooks. I was after some architecture-related books. The young lady who runs the place was so helpful finding books that suited me, then when she knew I wasn't a local, she went out of her way to suggest places for me to visit, she gave me a map, even called her husband to get exact directions... all that with a warm welcoming smile and a kind heart. It really made me feel at home.
